Celia Capace - Failed Phone Sex

This weeks blog will be a short one. It’s about my career as a phone sex worker and the shortness of the blog coincides with the brevity of that career. I once (many, many years ago) tried working in the phone sex industry. Tried is the optimum description here. It was during a time when my illness got so bad that I literally could rarely leave the house. Going to the bathroom 10 times a day was a good day. Add to that the sheer exhaustion and a sore arse from constantly wiping, on top of stomach cramps, I couldn’t move or walk much either. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

It was so long ago that Bill Gates was still a teen. The internet and computers were not the norms as yet. I rang a phone sex number from an adult magazine I’d bought and quickly told the lady on the phone I wasn’t looking for a service but wondered if she could help me with employment. She readily gave me a name and number to call. The job was simple enough. I was given a four-digit number to dial that would log me on or off when I wanted to work so I could pick my own hours. That helped immensely seeing as I was living with my parents and, of course, they had no idea nor did I want them to know of my new employment.

Every time I’d try to dial those four digits to log on I’d break out in a nervous sweat. I just couldn’t do it. I was out of my depths and very uncomfortable. I had no problem with phone sex with a partner but when it came to a stranger I was way out of my comfort zone. I didn’t know what to say or how to respond to a caller so decided to call the lady who had set me up to explain and resign. She tried to encourage me to continue by suggesting I read from a porn magazine or book. I knew I still couldn’t do it.

My new boss then proceeded to persuade me to be part of her new venture ‘call a caring friend’. This service was a chat service for companionship only. Sex talk was strictly forbidden. She specified that if a caller started to talk sexually I was to warn them once then hang up if they continued. She claimed consumer services sometimes listened in and she could be shut down for breaching consumer laws if this strict rule wasn’t adhered to.

I decided to give it a go. I got plenty of calls from guys wanting to talk dirty. I warned them once and they all got hung up on once they continued. I got only one call from someone wanting to chat and not about sex. This poor guy was thinking of killing himself and after talking to him for only a couple of minutes I realised he really needed help from someone more experienced than I and so gave him the number to Lifeline, a service he had no idea existed. I rang my boss after that call and quit totally.

Most of my employment has been as a receptionist and I’m proud to say I know I give good phone. But in the capacity as a phone sex operator, I felt the universe was saying loud and clear that this job was not for me.
